"Squeek & Ribbit" all started as a comic strip spin-off of my "Bad Atom" comics. At the time, my "Bad Atom" comic strips were very popular among my classmates. But some complained that "Bad Atom" was all I drew. And to be honest, I was getting a little bored of "Bad Atom" myself. So I created "Squeek & Ribbit", a spin-off series consisting of full-page comics. Squeek (misspelled intentionally) was a rat with a bad attitude and a gangster accent. Back then, I didn't even have a reason for the accent. I just thought it was funny. Ribbit was a frog who thought he was a bear. I also found this funny. The Kids (The Boy and The Girl) were the cruel owners. Overall, it was a very simple premise: that these two very different characters were forced to live in the same cage.
Within the span of a school week, I drew five full-page comics starring Squeek & Ribbit. (Unfortunately these comics were lost, but luckily I have a pretty good memory.) The first one explained the premise. The second one was about Squeek & Ribbit trying to escape the cage. Another one involved The Kids torturing their pets. And another one featured J.R. from my "Bad Atom" comics, as he sat on and tried to eat poor Squeek and Ribbit. Ribbit also made a cameo appearance in one of my "Bad Atom" one-panel strips.
The comics were well-received, and I had intended to make more, but I returned to "Bad Atom" instead. "Squeek & Ribbit" disappeared for several years. But the idea remained in the back of my head the entire time, and occasionally I would sketch the characters in the margin of my homework pages. But the revival didn't come until 2001.
That year, I had begun work on scripts and outlines for the "Bad Atom" TV series. And once again I was getting a little tired of working on "Bad Atom" all the time. That's when I returned to "Squeek & Ribbit". I started work on the concept for a "Squeek & Ribbit" TV series. In 2002 I wrote the pilot script, entitled "The Cage". In 2003, I finished the concept bible for the show, wrote several outlines for future scripts, and began drawing weekly comic strips. I have continued to draw them to this day, and of this writing, work has begun on a Flash-animated version of "The Cage". (And it looks great!) The future looks very bright for an idea that was created out of boredom nine years ago.
